Message From The Superintendent
Dear Suttons Bay Students and Families,
As the cooler air settles over the bay and our campus hums with joyful and engaging learning, we want to take a moment to thank you for the relentless energy, great care, and deep commitment you bring to Suttons Bay Public Schools. Whether you’ve been part of our community for generations or are new to the district, please know that you belong at the bay.
This theme isn’t just a slogan; it’s our promise. In a small, close-knit district like ours, every student is seen, known, and valued. We take great pride in offering a learning environment where relationships come first, where every voice matters, and where each student has a place to discover who they are and who they can become by the time they graduate.
As we move toward Thanksgiving, it feels especially important to pause and express gratitude for our students who show up each day ready to learn, for families who support and encourage them, and for our staff who pour their hearts into helping every student learn. Gratitude reminds us that we’re stronger together and that every small act of care, kindness, or connection contributes to the sense of belonging that defines our school community.
One of the most powerful ways we can help students thrive is by ensuring they are here every day, on time, and ready to learn. Research shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to meet grade-level expectations and graduate on time. Furthermore, students who feel a strong sense of belonging at school are nearly twice as likely to be engaged learners and three times more likely to earn higher grades. Every day matters—not just for academics, but for confidence, connection, and growth.
We know that life in a rural community brings both opportunities and challenges during the snow covered winter days with various family and work responsibilities that keep us moving 24/7. It’s never easy, but winter also shows us the incredible strength of community as we navigate everything that comes our way with a smile on our face. When we work together, we can make sure every student feels supported and every family feels connected to our shared purpose.
As we head into this season of gratitude and thanks, I encourage every family to take a moment each day to celebrate progress, practice thankfulness, and remind your child how much they matter, because they truly do. Together, we can ensure that all our students don’t just attend school, but feel they belong here at the bay.
Upward,
Casey Petz
