McKinney-Vento Education Assistance Act
The school district shall provide an educational environment that treats all students with dignity and respect. Every student shall have equal access to the same free appropriate educational opportunities. This commitment to the educational rights of children, youth, and youth not living with a parent or guardian, applies to all services, programs, and activities provided or made available, beginning at age 3. A student is eligible for support services if he or she lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, and can include living:
- In a shelter
- With a parent who is sharing housing with relatives or friends due to economic hardship
- In a motel/hotel, campground, car, or other similar situation due to lack of alternative, adequate housing
- On his/her own, and is not in the custody of a parent or legal guardian (runaway, on the street, kicked-out, "couch-surfing")
- As migrant, if housing conditions are inadequate
