Substitute Teachers and Assistants/Aides (external hires through ESS/Willsub)

To substitute teach in Michigan, the following are required:

  • Teachers: A minimum of 60 semester credit hours from a two- or four-year accredited college or university.
  • Assistants/aides, custodial, food service, secretarial, etc: Minimum of High school diploma or GED
  • All: Pass a federal and state fingerprint background check.
  • All: Completion of the ESS/WillSub application process which includes a valid substitute permit issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
